UK: Construction Deaths Reduction

10 June 2009
The UK Health and Safety Executive has predicted a fall of 25% in fatalities occurring in construction this year a figure that would be the lowest since the records began in 1981. The forecast predicts 15 deaths in 2008/09 compared to 75 in 2007/08. This improvement is attributed to greater awareness of health and safety issues. According to Graham Watts, chief executive of the Construction Industry Council, the slowdown in activity due to the credit crash could be partly responsible for this decrease, but he claims that there has undoubtedly been an improvement in the industry’s health and safety culture. The final report is to be published on 24 June.
