UK Meat Survey

A survey claims that up to a quarter of meat on sale in the UK does not meet national standards for animal welfare. This is because, while the UK has high standards of animal welfare, there are no restrictions on importing meat from countries that do not impose such standards. Because costs are often lower, sub-standard meat is often cheaper. There have been calls to address this loophole to protect both consumers and the UK food industry.
