UK Paternity Plans

29 January 2010
The UK is proposing to give fathers the legal right to take the place of the mother for the last 3 months of a 9-month maternity break. Fathers would receive the statutory government pay of £123 a week, and would then be able to take an additional unpaid three months off. This would, in effect, provide families with 12 months of parental leave. The idea is to allow mothers who earn more than their partners to return to work earlier than would otherwise have been possible.
