UK Salt Reduction Strategy

20 May 2009
A campaign to encourage the food industry to make further reductions in the salt content of some products has been launched by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA). The FSA wants to reduce the daily salt intake for adults to 6g from around 9.5g to help reduce the risk of health problems linked to excessive salt consumption. The initiative, which will be carried out on a voluntary basis, will run until 2012 for foods with traditionally high salt content such as bread, meat and cereals. Reduction targets have also been set for prepared foods such as pizza, ready meals and snacks. Experts believe that innovative technologies, new processing techniques and ingredient solutions could achieve further salt reductions.
