UK Won't Meet Renewables Targets

25 March 2009
The UK will have difficulties in meeting 2020 renewable energy targets without state intervention, claims the country’s Financial Services Authority (FSA). At present, old coal, gas and nuclear plants generate a quarter of the UK’s energy. These plants are all scheduled to be closed by 2020, meaning that massive investment will be required in order to secure future supplies. Under new EU requirements, the UK must obtain 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. In 2006, only 1.5% of energy was sourced from renewable sources. The UK Government's climate change adviser, Adair Turner, has acknowledged that public money might be required to support long-term green energy projects.
