Vegetarianism to Fight Climate Change

14 May 2009
The Belgian city of Ghent plans to hold a vegetarian day once a week in a bid to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Civil servants and elected councillors will eat vegetarian meals once a week from this month, with schoolchildren following suit in September. The purpose of the exercise is to raise awareness and help reduce emissions generated by livestock. Animals bred for food are responsible for almost one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UN. Ghent also hopes that the measure will have a positive effect on healthy eating. The city plans to distribute maps to help people locate the best vegetarian restaurants in town.
