Voluntary Non-Use of Colourings

04 February 2009
The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a list of food products that have been voluntarily reformulated to remove 6 food colours associated with hyperactivity in young children. The 6 additives - Tartrazine (E102), Quinoline Yellow (E104), Sunset Yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Ponceau 4R (E124) and Allura Red (E129) – were identifed in the so-called ‘Southampton Study’, which linked them with child behaviour. The 6 colours in question are also under the spotlight at the European level. In July last year, MEPs voted for products containing any of the 6 colours to be labelled "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children".
