Wales Wants Tighter GMO Control

01 July 2009
The Welsh Assembly wants to see stricter rules on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and more rigorous controls to protect conventional and organic crops from GM contamination. The set of proposals includes tougher measures to protect GM-free zones, a ban on GM crops in national parks, permission to plant and a mandatory GM crop register with public access. The Welsh Minister for Rural Affairs says she is committed to maintaining the right of consumers to choose non-GM food and the ability of farmers in Wales to grow organic and conventional crops free from GM contamination.
