Wasteful European Habits Revealed

10 March 2009
European citizens generated an average of 522 kg of municipal waste each in 2007. Denmark, Ireland and Cyprus were the biggest culprits, topping the table with more than 750kg of waste per person. Least wasteful Member States included Romania, Poland and the Czech Republic. Methods used to treat waste also varied greatly, according to the Eurostat survey. While almost 100% of waste in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland is land filled, 60% of waste in Germany, Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands is recycled. Municipal waste is mostly generated by households, but also includes similar waste generated by small enterprises.
